Top Players To Watch Out For At 2024 Mexico Open

The upcoming Vidanta event is all set to return for its third edition on the PGA Tour this week. As of now, a total of 132 players are announced to be on the field. However, the numbers can vary before the tournament starts as multiple sponsor exemptions can come into play.

World No. 24 and the reigning champion Tony Finau is the top-ranked player from the Official World Golf Rankings in the upcoming 2024 Mexico Open. Also, he is on the top of the power rankings released by the US-based Tour. The American golfer has a scoring average of 64.83 in the last starts at Vidanta Vallarta.

Nicolai Hojgaard, who is currently ranked 34th in the World, is also on the field. He stands in second spot in the power rankings and will be an exciting talent to watch out for. DP World Tour player Thorbjorn Olesen is also set to make his first PGA Tour start of the 2024 season. Just last month, he won the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, therefore, is ranked third in the power rankings.

The two-time PGA Tour winner, Emiliano Grillo, is the third player from the top 40 in the World to be on the field. He is currently the World No. 40 and is placed fourth in the power rankings of the 2024 Mexico Open. Meanwhile, the fifth-ranked power player is  Stephan Jaeger. If he proceeds to the final two rounds at Vidanta Vallarta this week, the German would record his 22nd consecutive cut on the US-based Tour.

Since most of the top OWGR players are unavailable this week, the 2024 Mexico Open will be a great opportunity for many young players to make a mark on the PGA Tour. It will be really intriguing to see if Tony Finau can defend his title at Vidanta Vallarta and become only the third player to do so in the history of the tournament.

As per reports, the Strategic Sports Group, fronted by Fenway Sports Group, will start investing in the PGA Tour next week. Moreover, this association has several high-profile sports team owners. This investment is to form a for-profit entity known as PGA Tour Enterprises that controls the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf under its umbrella.

Also, Sportico had reported that the investment amount was around $3 billion but a PGA associate stated that the information might be wrong, and didn’t elaborate further on the details. This deal might also resolve the interrogations of the US government and show that the PGA Tour is not entirely dependent on the Saudi PIF for financial backing. The billion-dollar investment will also cover the tour’s domestic rights but the PGA and SSG refrained from commenting on it. Apart from this, let’s have a look at the scenario of the PGA Tour schedule!

PGA Tour’s 2024 Schedule So Far

The Tour just wrapped up its trip to California for The American Express, where amateur golfer Nick Dunlap became the first amateur after Phil Mickelson to bag the title. Now, its current venture is for the Farmers Insurance Open that is currently underway this week. After this, the PGA Tour will have its signature event, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Rory McIlroy has confirmed his participation in the tournament. Justin Rose is the defending champion of the event.

As of now, the PGA Tour has had its first signature event, the Sentry Tournament, where Chris Kirk came out victorious. Then, the tour traveled to Hawaii for the Sony Open. The Farmers Insurance Open is the fourth event on the PGA Tour roster wherein, after the first two rounds, Jaeger Stephan is sitting atop the leaderboard with a score of 11-under par.

Closely following Stephan is Nicolai Hojgaard, who sits in second place, one stroke behind. Also, Ludvig Aberg is part of the event and has acquired the T10 position. Alongside him, two prominent golfers, Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau, also occupy the same place. Now, it is time to see who bags this event’s title.

Max Homa, who secured the title last year over Keegan Bradley by two shots, will be defending his title this week. This is his second tournament of the year after finishing T14 at the Sentry. Apart from Homa, World No. 5, Xander Schauffele, who finished at T3 in the American Express, will also be playing in the tournament. However, The American Express winner, Nick Dunlap, who set a record of being the youngest amateur to win a PGA tour event in 114 years, went on to withdraw from the event just days before it began.

But Christiaan Bezuidenhout has promised his participation. On the list of high-profile golfers, there are also names like Tony Finau, Patrick Cantlay, and Ludvig Aberg. Michael Block, who missed the cut in last week’s event, will be also be seen in this tournament.

There are also other golfers on the list, like Rookie of the Year Eric Cole and Jason Day. Ryder Cup warriors Shane Lowry, Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka are also participating. Two golfers who fought injuries to get into the tournament are Daniel Berger and Will Zalatoris. Thus, it is to be seen whether Max Homa comes out triumphant this year or a new golfer bags the title.

Jon Rahm received a reported $500 million check to switch to LIV Golf but his team still has vacant spots as LIV approaches its first event at Mayakoba. Time is ticking and the golf world eagerly awaits to witness his teammates. Some reports state that his team’s name will be Legion XIII and Kieran Vincent might join the team.

But that still leaves plenty of vacant spaces in the team, defying the past rumors that PGA Tour golfers would follow Rahm, which didn’t happen. Moreover, some stalwarts have denied LIV offers and retained their PGA Tour cards. Let’s take a look at the golfers who declined LIV’s lucrative deals.

Tommy Fleetwood

As per reports from the Telegraph, Ryder Cup golfer Tommy Fleetwood rejected the LIV offer and continued on the DP World Tour. Reports state that he was chosen for Rahm’s team and despite knowing it, he chose to stay on the tour. Recently, he won the Dubai Invitational over World No.2 Rory McIlroy

Nicolai Hojgaard

Like Fleetwood, Hojgaard also denied the LIV offer in the same week. He thinks he’s the hottest golfer on the tour, with three DP World Tour wins and a Ryder Cup victory. The golfer is only 22 and thinks that he’d learn more good golf if he didn’t make a switch.

Ludvig Aberg

Another hot prospect is Aberg, who has a PGA Tour and DP World Tour win after turning pro. He also defeated World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler in the Ryder Cup. But as he was approached, he sternly denied it and stated,

“We realised that I could potentially burn a lot of bridges, and I wasn’t interested in that. When I look back, I am very confident in my decision. I will never chase money; what I do is compete. I did the right thing.”

Tony Finau

One golfer rumored to be joining LIV was Tony Finau. Initially, when the golfer was asked to address the issue, he denied it. But finally, he posted something regarding his 2024 schedule that cleared out his fidelity to the PGA Tour.

“I’m excited for 2024 and looking forward to playing my 10th season on the PGA Tour! And stoked to be defending in both Mexico and Houston.”

Jason Day

Jason Day was another golfer who was rumored to join Rahm’s squad but soon after the rumors died, he was teeing off in the PGA Tour events and secured an under-top-10 rank in the Sentry Tournament. As time goes by, it will be interesting to see which new golfers join Jon Rahm.

Also, Jason Day and Tony Finau, who turned down rumors of moving to LIV Golf, have promised their names in the field. Other significant names include Billy Horschel, Rickie Fowler, and Shane Lowry. Golf equipment manufacturer, TaylorMade, has been on a spree to renew contracts with its existing players. Just before the Sentry, they announced to extend their partnership with current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Now, they have announced a multi-year contract extension with European Ryder Cup-winning team member Tommy Fleetwood.

The English golfer had been using the equipment from the golf manufacturer since 2021. He has so far recorded 15 top-10 finishes and also three top-five finishes in the majors using their equipment. In an X post, TaylorMade announced extending its partnership with the six-time DP World Tour champion Tommy Fleetwood.

After the announcement of his contract renewal with TaylorMade, Tommy Fleetwood praised the company and was quoted by Golf Monthly as saying,

“Deciding on your commercial partners plays a huge role in your career. Being a member of Team TaylorMade is something I am proud of, so renewing my contract is a natural progression for my continued improvement.”

President and CEO of TaylorMade Golf, David Abeles, also released a statement regarding their new extended partnership with Tommy Fleetwood. He called the Englishman “one of the classiest golfers” and stated looking forward to providing him with high-quality equipment.

“Tommy is one of the classiest golfers in the game. From how he carries himself on the course to how he interacts with people off it, he truly epitomises the TaylorMade values of high-level performance and relatability to golfers from all walks of life,” Abeles said.

Tommy Fleetwood will continue to be part of TaylorMade’s long list of golfers which include current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the 82-time PGA Tour champion Tiger Woods, Collin Morikawa, and many more. Although there are not many details available regarding the length of the multi-year contract.

What Is Tommy Fleetwood Having In His Bag At The Sentry Tournament?

The Englishman is currently at the Kalpua Resort’s Plantation Course playing in The Sentry Tournament. After the end of the first round on Thursday, Tommy Fleetwood shot 3 under 70 and was placed T37 on the leaderboard. For the second round, he is paired with Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay and will tee off at 4:27 p.m. ET.

At the Sentry Tournament 2024, Tommy Fleetwood is carrying P·7TW irons which were originally designed by Tiger Woods. He is also carrying his favorite BRNR Mini Driver and Stealth UDI 3 Driving Iron. His bag also has a TaylorMade Hi-Toe 3, a new TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver, and a Qi10 5-wood. He is using TP5x pix golf balls.

Tommy Fleetwood is carrying all the brilliant and necessary equipment at the Sentry Tournament. Despite having a not-so-good first round, he would be hoping to bounce back in the upcoming next three rounds and climb up the leaderboard.

In an online banter, it’s been revealed that Billy Horschel claimed $45 million to switch to LIV Golf. Ian Poulter made the claim in a social media exchange. The golf world is yet to cope with Jon Rahm‘s defection, and a new rumor has already started.

The news unraveled during a feud between Horschel and Poulter. Ian posted a video displaying his swinging speed. As this came to the attention of Horschel, he took a smart jab at the golfer, saying, “one of those guys that over exaggerate their club head speed.”

Billy posted a chart of swing speed, and according to that, Ian’s speed was 110 mph. But Ian defended himself, stating his swing speed is 115 mph. But the story doesn’t end here. How did Horschel’s news come to light?

Billy Horschel is Allegedly Considering LIV Golf

Billy Horschel has seven PGA Tour wins and has been a loyalist on the circuit for over a decade. But as per recent reports, the Florida-based player is thinking of a switch. Engaged in an online strife, Billy was exposed by Ian. Poulter stated that Billy asked for $45 million to go to LIV.

“It’s alright Billy… I’m normally ok with numbers.. So I got it wrong by about $9 Million per MPH difference that you asked for to come join LIV. What’s a few numbers between friends.”

They were teammates and stood in third place in the Franklin Templeton Shootout. Poulter defected to LIV last year and he received around $20 million. It is to see whether his claims about his old friend are true or not.

Apart from this, Tony Finau was thought to be switching to LIV, but the claims were turned down by the golfer, and no sooner did he disclose his 2024 schedule. Staying loyal to the tour are Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland, who received LIV contracts, but went on to deny them. They plan to continue with the Regal Sports Association and not be a part of the LIV circuit anytime soon.

After a successful spree of tournaments in 2023, the PGA Tour has now shifted its focus to the first event of 2024, the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The first “signature event” of the year will kick off on Thursday, January 4. The tournament will have the same 72-hole format and will end on Sunday, January 7. It will be played at Kapalua Resort’s plantation course in Hawaii with a limited field of 40 players.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions was first played in 1953. It initially had a field of golfers who won a tournament on the PGA Tour in the previous season. However, later on, the qualification criteria changed slightly with winners of the previous season getting a direct entry and the remaining slots being filled by the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Since 1999, the Sentry Tournament of Champions has been held in Hawaii at the Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course. Interestingly, it has a par 73 course and a length of 7,596 yards.

The 2024 Sentry Tournaments of Champions will have a prize purse of $15,000,000. The winner of the first of eight PGA Tour signature events will receive a paycheck of $2,700,000 and the prestigious trophy.

Who is Confirmed to Play at the 2024 Sentry Tournaments of Champions?

The 2024’s first PGA Tour event, the Sentry Tournament of Champions will have a field of 40 players. The defending champion Jon Rahm is already ineligible to be part of the tournament as he made a move to LIV Golf earlier in December 2023. Rory McIlroy’s participation in the first signature event of the year is still not clear.

However, the current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and reigning FedEx Cup Champion Viktor Hovland, have confirmed their participation.

PGA Tour pros Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth,  Tom Kim, Sahith Theegala, and Ludvig Aberg are among other winners who will also be teeing up at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Rory McIlroy, Nick Taylor, Sepp Straka, Luke List, Akshay Bhatia, Vincent Norrman, Camillo Villegas, Lucas Glover, and a few more golfers may also be present in the field of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The last edition of the Sentry Tournament of Champions in 2023 saw Jon Rahm shooting an unbelievable round of 63 on Sunday to win the event. This left the runner-up, Collin Morikawa in a nutshell, who was leading the table after the first 54 holes.

With Jon Rahm not being eligible to be part of the Sentry Tournament of Championship in 2024, a new champion being crowned is confirmed. Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler will be hot favorites to win the first signature event of the year. Now it remains to be seen who will lift the first PGA Tour title of the year and that will only happen on January 7, 2024.

Jon Rahm’s switch to LIV Golf has been the talk of the golf town since well before it even became official. Given that the move is very recent, people are now wondering how the deal with the new league works or which team Jon Rahm would be joining. For some time, there were rumors of the Spaniard joining Sergio Garcia‘s all-Spanish team or Phil Mickelson‘s squad, given that both golfers share family relations.

But, to the dismay of all these opinions, Rahm will have his team. Reports stated that he would own the franchise. Thus, it is highly likely that there will be new faces on the team. Who could be the best golfers for the team? Let’s explore.

Jon Rahm’s possible teammates in his 2024 LIV team

As Tony Finau has declared that he is not switching to LIV Golf for the next season, the name automatically gets omitted from the predictions. Otherwise, rising star Finau would have been a perfect fit for Rahm’s zealous team. Here’s a list of other assumed entries in Rahm’s team.

Jordan Spieth: It was quite evident from Spieth’s reaction that he couldn’t afford to lose Jon Rahm. Also, Spieth called him an asset for the PGA Tour. Probably, if Spieth makes a switch to LIV Golf next season, he could be a first-hand pick for Jon Rahm.

Talor Gooch: He stood second in the LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah and fifth in LIV Golf Chicago. He also displayed a terrific last-round score of 68 at LIV Golf Greenbrier. Gooch is in outstanding form. Having him on the team for next season could boost the overall strength of the team.

Xander Schauffele: Schauffele had nine best-ten finishes on the PGA Tour in 2023. Also, he had ten PGA Tour wins until now. If Schauffele switches his league, he might be a boon in disguise for Rahm’s team.

Jason Dufner: He’s one of the top names entering the LIV Golf promotional event. He’s the 2013 PGA Championship winner and has access to the 2024 PGA Tour as an exemption. If he gets through the qualification test for LIV, Rahm can probably hop on this major winner.

Chase Koepka: He’s a relegated player in the LIV league, watching out for a new team. Being the brother of Brooks, he might stand to work under Rahm’s supervision.

These are probable names getting highlights for Rahm’s new team. Only time can give a clear view of which players will be seen in Rahm’s squad.

The PGA Tour is having a tough fall season with Jon Rahm‘s departure. Moreover, Rahm will be playing in the rival league, LIV Golf. Apart from Lee, Tony Finau has confirmed his presence on the 2024 PGA Tour roster

With so many new changes in the golf world, let’s speculate where the PGA Tour stands now.

The PGA Tour is in deep waters of dismay following departure of Jon Rahm

The PGA Tour is going through a tough time. While the date to finalize the framework agreement nears, its asset, Jon Rahm, left the tour. Rahm left the tour at a juncture where LIV has an upper hand in negotiations and the PGA Tour lags behind. In these times of ordeal, when some significant golfers have refused to continue for money, others have stayed back.

Rory McIlroy has decided to support his tour. Tiger Woods, who returned after a long time of rehabilitation, is continuing with PGAT. Also, players like Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, and many others are reported to be seen at the marquee events.

The PGA Tour is also contemplating having other financial backing than PIF. It has already received a lot of sponsorship requests. On that note, though the PGA Tour is striving, with time, it will get through the storm and approach bright days.
