Early Life

Patrick Mahomes was born on 17th September 1995 in Tyler, Texas to Randi Martin and Pat Mahomes, who is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. He is also the godson of LaTroy Hawkins, who was teammates with his father at the Minnesota Twins. Mahomes also has a younger brother, Jackson Mahomes, who is a social media influencer and is five years younger than the star NFL QB. The two brothers attended the Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. While in High School, Patrick Mahomes played football, basketball, and baseball making him a multi-faceted athlete, which admittedly helped him become better as a quarterback. As a senior, Mahomes put incredible numbers to his name by securing 4,619 passing yards, with 50 passing touchdowns, 948 rushing yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns. Mahomes was named Maxpreps Male Athlete of the Year 2013-2014 for his incredible performance in his senior year. Due to his lethal dual-threat capabilities, he was rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com. He received offers from different universities but he chose to commit to Texas Tech under the coaching of Kliff Kingsbury.

As a freshman at Texas Tech, Patrick Mahomes started as a backup to Davis Webb. It was against Oklahoma State when Webb got injured giving Mahomes a chance to start off his college career. Patrick started the last three games of the season when Webb hurt himself again. That season Mahomes played seven games throwing for 1,547 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.   In his sophomore season, Patrick Mahomes became the starter for Texas Tech. He led his team to a winning record (7-6) that season after starting every game. He passed for 4,653 yards for 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.    As a junior, Patrick Mahomes fired on all cylinders by breaking multiple records with his electric performances however the Red Raiders failed to appear for a bowl game after finishing just outside the winning bracket with a 5-7 record. That season Mahomes threw for 5,052 yards for 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.   After his successful junior year where he led the nation in yards per game (421), passing yards (5,052), total offense (5,312), points responsible for (318), and total touchdowns (53), Mahomes decided to go for the 2017 NFL Draft, forgoing his senior year.

He also boasts a lengthy resume with six Pro Bowls, two-time First Team All-Pro, two NFL MVPs, and one-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year along with several other awards.

Baseball Connection

Patrick Mahomes has always had a special love for baseball. His strong pitching ability has made him a skillful quarterback. However, his love for baseball derives from his father Pat Mahomes, who was a Major League Baseball pitcher.    The six-time Pro Bowler used to play baseball as a student-athlete. Before going to college, Mahomes was a top Major League Baseball prospect in 2014. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Yet he did not sign a contract with them and decided to pursue a football career with Texas Tech.   While at Texas Tech, Mahomes used to split his time between playing baseball and football. As a sophomore, he even played three games for his baseball team recording no hits in two at bats, and three runs allowed, as a pitcher. However, just before the commencement of his junior year, Mahomes decided to let go of baseball and give his complete attention to football.

Comparison With Tom Brady

Patrick Mahomes has been a force to reckon with ever since he became a starting quarterback for the Chiefs. His consistency has made several analysts and media personnel draw connections with the seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.   Mahomes’ early success and drive to win multiple Super Bowls has left many convinced that he is probably the next Tom Brady the league is witnessing. Not just as a player but also as a professional he has been a true leader just like Brady.    With just six years in the league as a starter, he has already eclipsed many great names such as Troy Aikman, Eli Manning, Dan Marino, Drew Brees, and others. Mahomes has already started to rank close to Brady in many stat comparisons, but whether he will win seven Super Bowls or more is something that is left to be seen.
