Amid a rather chaotic last couple of weeks in F1, fans rejoice over the news that Drive to Survive’s season 6 will be released soon. The popular Netflix series focuses on the intricacies of the F1 world. It lifts the curtain and lets fans see the underbelly of the world they adore. The latest season of the series, as reported by ‘Tudum by Netflix,’ has ten episodes, premiering on the 23rd of February. However, the absence of Max Verstappen from the promos has become a cause for concern.

The latest installment follows the 2023 season, which turned out to be a record-breaking campaign for Max Verstappen. He aimed to improve his 2022 performance and did an unexpectedly impressive job. However, it looks like the emphasis will be on the smaller storylines this time around.

The season opener will focus on Aston Martin and their growing financial issues. Lawrence Stroll wants to do everything in his power to ensure his team’s resurgence, and cameras follow him in his pursuit. The next three episodes capture Nyck de Vries’ axing, McLaren‘s dip, and the battle between Haas and Williams, respectively. Alpine drivers take center stage in episode 5 as their rivalry reaches new heights.

Episode 6 follows Lewis Hamilton as the 7X world champion contemplates his future in F1. The following episodes see a light shine on athletes and celebs investing in Alpine while also focusing on Ferrari bringing Fred Vasseur on board. Episode 9 lays emphasis on Daniel Ricciardo coming back to a driving seat after almost a one-year break. The season finale dives deeper into the rivalry of Mercedes and Ferrari at the end of the 2023 season.

Why isn’t Max Verstappen in DTS season 6?

It is no surprise that Max Verstappen is not the focus of Drive to Survive. In an interview with TIME, he expressed his concerns over the growing marketing-centric moves by the sport’s authorities. He believes the sport is starting to lay emphasis on things that aren’t as important as racing.

Hence, he grows wary of where F1 is headed. With three F1 championships already under his belt, the Dutchman isn’t hungry for any records. Hence, if the dramatization continues, Verstappen will not stick around to experience it.

Drive to Survive had a massive impact on the sport’s viewership numbers, especially in America. With the earlier seasons detailing Verstappen’s story, the Dutchman saw a huge fanbase form in the US. However, the 26-year-old isn’t a fan of the dramatization of his story. He doesn’t want to hear his story from someone else’s perspective. Furthermore, given the series is essentially a recap of a season, Verstappen feels it is unnecessary for him to be a part of the narrative since he already knows what will happen.

Oscar Piastri caused a lot of chaos in the 2022 driver market. The Aussie rookie turned down his chance to step up to a race seat at Alpine. Instead, he had already signed a contract with McLaren. As a result of Piastri’s decision, the two top midfield rivals indulged in a legal battle. Obviously, any individual would have been tense in a situation like this, but if Oscar Piastri was to be believed, he stayed calm and instead played chess!

On the Fast and Curious podcast, the 22-year-old revealed that, amid the Alpine-McLaren controversy, he went to play chess with his neighbor. He said, “We went and played chess while social media exploded.” All of it began when Sebastian Vettel declared his retirement, leading Fernando Alonso to leave Alpine to take over the seat at Aston Martin.

Following Alonso’s announcement, Alpine released a statement saying that reserve driver Piastri will be racing for them in 2023. However, as soon as the French team made this announcement, Oscar Piastri came up with a shocker.

Taking to social media the Aussie wrote that Alpine had made this announcement without his consent. In addition, he mentioned that in 2023 he will no longer be driving for them.

After a few days, the Woking team announced that Piastri would be driving for them. This was done in response to Daniel Ricciardo’s termination by McLaren. Nevertheless, the betrayal from Piastri had made the Enstone outfit bitter, which made them reluctant to accept McLaren’s announcement.

Subsequently, Alpine got ready for a battle that would ultimately bring the issue to court and involve the Contract Recognition Board. On September 2, the CRB declared that Piastri‘s McLaren contract was legitimate and that he would drive for the papaya outfit.

What happened after Oscar Piastri’s controversial switch to McLaren?

After Oscar Piastri made the infamous switch, there were whispers of links between Alonso’s manager Flavio Briatore, and Piastri’s manager Mark Webber. However, Fernando Alonso denied any such involvement of his manager and claimed that what’s happening with Oscar ‘is completely not his thing. ‘

Although Alonso got away with these statements, Daniel Ricciardo was the one who was most impacted by the situation —both negatively and positively. On the downside, Piastri’s arrival provided made Ricciardo lose his F1 seat. However, if we look at the bright side, the Honey Badger got time to fully recharge his batteries. He secured a contract with Red Bull as a reserve driver and enjoyed an 8-month break from the sport.

Subsequently, he got a seat at AlphaTauri after the squad kicked out Nyck de Vries. Not letting the chance pass, Ricciardo displayed his experience at the Mexican Grand Prix. Consequently, he has been given one additional year to establish his worth and turn his fairy tale dream into reality.

Coming back to Alpine, the squad now includes two good French drivers, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon. Even though both the drivers are incredibly talented, their relationship is the problem. Because Gasly and Ocon have been rivals since they were young, their present dynamic on the squad isn’t beneficial to the team’s development.

While Alpine is still having problems, Oscar Piastri has already won his maiden race in F1, albeit not the main Grand Prix. However, considering that McLaren gives him the right car this season, the Aussie can get some wins or maybe fight for the title.

The Super Bowl LVIII is over, and the Kansas City Chiefs secured a thrilling victory in the dying seconds of the game. Trailing for most of the match, the Chiefs dug deep to win the title, sending fans into a frenzy. One such fan was none other than Alpine driver Pierre Gasly, who uploaded a story on his Instagram celebrating the win.

The story had a photo of Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes holding the NFL trophy. Gasly added the caption, “ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! WHAT A GAME!” to the photo. He added the words, “Let’s get it,” and tagged the Chiefs’ account before congratulating them.

Chiefs’ Tight End, Travis Kelce, also played a starring role in the win, claiming a crucial gain of a few yards right before the game-winning touchdown pass. Kelce is an important member of Alpine‘s F1 setup, given his role in investing in the team alongside Mahomes.

Rory McIlroy (Golf), Anthony Joshua (Boxing), Juan Mata, and Trent Alexander Arnold (both Soccer) are also key investors in the French team alongside Otro Capital.

The professional athletes and the investment group committed to an investment of about $218 million in the team. In exchange, they acquired a 24% stake in the team. To showcase their support for the Enstone outfit, both Kelce and Mahomes were present at the inaugural Las Vegas GP last year.

Travis Kelce thrilled to invest in the team that houses Pierre Gasly

Following his investment in Alpine, Kelce revealed he was thrilled to lead an investor group and join forces with Mahomes. He added he looked forward to the new chapter and was restless to see what they could achieve together.

Further showcasing his support for the team, Kelce recently flaunted a black Alpine cap on his podcast. The act generated a lot of buzz, with fans wanting to get their hands on the same.

Despite the investment, Alpine saw a dip in its performance from 2022. The team finished in P4 that season, securing 173 points but no podiums. However, the following season saw them tumble down 6th, with 120 points.

The only positive to come from the season was that Alpine secured two podium finishes. Nonetheless, the investment remains a ray of hope for the French team, who would be looking to improve in 2024.

After four difficult years with McLaren, Fernando Alonso announced that he was retiring from Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season. According to four-time world champion, Alain Prost, the Spaniard’s story in the sport was over back then. However, Alonso shocked the Frenchman when he announced his return for the 2021 season with Alpine (formerly Renault).

Prost, who served as the non-executive director of the Enstone-based team back then, was anxious about Alonso’s return. Even though Alonso had won both his championships with the team in 2005 and 2006, his second stint with the team (2008-2009) had an acrimonious end.

Hence, a third time could’ve proved fatal, as per Prost. But the 42-year-old’s maturity pleasantly surprised him. Prost told Motorsport Magazine (as quoted by Motorsportweek.com), “I was very worried before he came, but he surprised me positively. He was very good, no problems and no political play.”

The ex-McLaren driver was very impressed with the professionalism that Alonso showcased on his return to the sport and the team. Alonso impressed Prost with his attitude “not only on the track but also off the track”.

However, that relationship did not last too long. Prost departed Alpine in 2021, whereas Alonso himself left the team for Aston Martin in 2023. The Spaniard alleged a lack of professionalism with Alpine, owing to their delayed contract extension process.

Fernando Alonso made a sensational switch to Aston Martin in 2023

As the 2022 summer break approached, Fernando Alonso was quite keen to sign a contract extension with Alpine. However, he blamed a lack of professionalism on their end to retain his services, and as a result, he chose to leave.

On the flip side, Aston Martin, led by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, quickly got the paperwork done and poached Alonso away from Alpine. Alonso made contact with Lawrence Stroll after Sebastian Vettel had announced his retirement in July 2022. Alonso revealed that Stroll was very quick to convince him about the project and entice him with a contract.

Many paddock experts termed Alonso’s move as a career suicide. In 2022, Aston Martin had an extremely slow car and finished seventh in the Constructors’ championship. However, 2023 came as a surprise to everyone. Alonso ended up with eight podiums and a P5 for the team in the Constructors’ standings.

So far, five F1 teams have launched their liveries for the 2024 season, and almost all of them are predominantly black or have some significant black elements in them. McLaren and Williams have a decent amount of color on their liveries. However, Sauber, Alpine, and Haas have gone extreme in terms of having a black and dull livery. The reason behind the same is the fact that they feature exposed carbon fiber. While paint usually covers the same, the lack of it is bothering the fans. But why are teams shedding the paint?

F1 is all about performance and being fast on the tracks. If a car weighs more than the rest, it will inevitably be slow on the tracks in the long run. As such, shedding as much weight as possible while not hampering a car’s performance is key. This is where exposed carbon fiber comes into play for the F1 teams.

According to Mark Hughes from The Race, each full-color scheme to a car adds at least 1 kilogram (2.3 pounds) of weight, which affects performance. To put the same into numbers, a kilo of extra weight adds around 0.03 seconds to a lap time.

In a race of around 60 laps, this would translate into 1.8 seconds. This means that a car would be 1.8 seconds slower in a race only because of added weight (via paint in this scenario).

To put things into further perspective, a full paint job on a car adds around 6 kilograms (13.227 pounds). Certain teams (such as McLaren) are turning to vinyl to add color to their cars instead of paint. The material is lighter and saves crucial weight while allowing their cars to stand out from the crowd.

Drivers’ weight included, a car’s minimum weight should be 798 kgs (1759 lbs). While this has about 70 to 80 kgs of the driver (which drivers too look to optimize), under the latest regulations, teams are doing everything they can to ensure they only add weight that aids in performance. The rest only acts as a barrier for them.

What is the Carbon Fiber material that F1 teams use?

For decades, the teams in F1 have built their cars almost entirely of a material called carbon fiber. It is the exposed black part of a car that teams are now in favor of showing off rather than covering it with paint.

The primary reason behind the use of this material is its strength-to-weight ratio. While most other materials that provide good strength to cars are very heavy, carbon fiber is amongst the lightest and strongest materials for the job.

Furthermore, it acts as an excellent safety material for the drivers, owing to its tensile strength. Teams require multiple layers of CF on each part to ensure maximum durability.

They vacuum layers together before putting the parts into a pressure cooker to complete the manufacturing process. McLaren introduced the material in F1 when they first started using carbon fiber back in the 1980s.

Alpine had a mega launch where they did not just unveil their 2024 F1 car but also their WEC hypercar. Apart from Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, another face familiar to the F1 audience appeared for the event. That was Mick Schumacher, who will take the wheel for Alpine in the WEC in 2024. Ocon, who is great friends with Schumacher, was in awe of the A424, Alpine’s WEC hypercar. However, Ocon ruled out following in the German driver’s footsteps.

Schumacher previously raced for Haas in 2021 and 2022. Owing to a number of crashes in the latter year that cost the cash-strapped side a fortune, team principal Guenther Steiner decided to get rid of him.

The 24-year-old was out of favor for the entirety of 2023 and served Mercedes as their development driver. The WEC stint with Alpine in 2024 will now mark Schumacher’s return to racing. Despite Schumacher’s comeback to the racing circuit, Ocon is unwilling to try his hand out at WEC.

Speaking during the launch event, the Frenchman said, “It looks mega, I have to say. The focus is always 2000% on Formula 1. But I think as soon as one F1 driver will do Le Mans while the F1 season is going, many more drivers will do so. I’m waiting for that moment to see what happens.”

F1 has carved out an image of being the pinnacle of motorsport for itself over the years. Despite the 24 hours of Le Mans holding a place of reverence in every driver’s heart, F1 is seen as a superior racing discipline.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen, however, is a big fan of endurance racing. In an interview in 2023, the Dutchman even let his wish known to race at the Le Mans. Meanwhile, Ocon sang Schumacher’s praises and backed him to win the French 24-hour race.

Esteban Ocon’s heartfelt wish for Mick Schumacher and a cryptic comment on Mercedes links

2024 will mark Alpine’s debut in the hypercar category of the WEC. While the A424 looks good on first impression, it is up against the likes of Ferrari and Aston Martin, the main contenders of the discipline. Esteban Ocon, however, stood firmly with his team and his friend, Mick Schumacher.

The Frenchman said, “First of all, to have Mick. I think he’s bringing a lot of experience and expertise. He’s obviously a very talented driver in general. I really hope that they are going to be winning Le Mans this year. I will be supporting and cheering for them.”

Schumacher and Ocon forged a special bond right from childhood. The two got to know each other during their time at Mercedes’ young drivers’ program.

Despite reaching F1, the duo is still under contract with the Silver Arrows. That proximity to Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolff could give them an opportunity to replace Lewis Hamilton when the seven-time champion will make his switch to Ferrari in 2025.

Weighing his chances to make the high-profile switch, Ocon acknowledged that he’s “always had strong links with Mercedes”. He also, however, made it clear that Alpine was his sole focus, going into the 2024 season.

With the shock departure of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari in 2025, Mercedes have a vacant position in their driver line-up. As the silly season of F1 ramps up, many drivers have been thrown into the mix to bag that seat at the Silver Arrows. However, on the day that Alpine revealed their 2024 challenger – the A524, Esteban Ocon dropped his name as a possible replacement at Mercedes despite his current contract with the French team.

The Race then speculated about the possibility of the 27-year-old moving to Mercedes and replacing Hamilton. While the French racing driver has committed himself to Alpine for the time being, The Race quoted him as saying, “I’m still a Merc junior driver, still contracted to them. It is how it is, we’ll see.”

Ocon’s current contract with Alpine, formerly known as Renault, is set to run out at the end of the 2024 season. And his ties with Toto Wolff could be immensely helpful in convincing him to ditch the Enstone project.

Wolff, who is the team principal at Mercedes, was a key player in landing Ocon the Alpine drive after the Frenchman’s 2018 exit from Racing Point (now Aston Martin). More than what Wolff has to offer, it is the lack of what Alpine can that will perhaps decide Ocon’s future.

After a lackluster 2023 season, Alpine finished in P6 in the Constructors’ championship. If yet another dismal season is to follow, Ocon would perhaps be keen to switch allegiances to Mercedes if the offer comes up.

What are the chances of Esteban Ocon potentially joining Mercedes?

2023 was a pretty disappointing year for Alpine. The team could only muster up 120 points during the 22-race calendar and the only highlight they had was a solitary podium that Esteban Ocon grabbed at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Moreover, Ocon’s inter-team rivalry with Pierre Gasly was tense on multiple occasions as well. The two are known to be bitter rivals from their junior racing days and even came together in a double DNF for the team at the 2023 Australian GP.

Hence, Ocon would perhaps be willing to ditch such a hostile environment at the French team and move on to Mercedes if the opportunity arises. With the Silver Arrows still in contention for the top 3 spots, Ocon would be in the running for podiums more often if he makes the move.

However, the path isn’t clear for him yet. Many names have been thrown in the mix. With the likes of Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Mick Schumacher, and Valtteri Bottas vying for that seat alongside George Russell, Ocon has his work cut out for him if he wants to drive for Mercedes in 2025.

Alpine F1 had a difficult season last year as they most often finished outside the points. Arguably, their sole highlight of the season was that solitary podium finish for Esteban Ocon during the Monaco GP. After a P6 finish in the Constructors’ championship last year, the French team has now come out with a bold statement. They have revealed to the fans that they have had a massive overhaul in terms of their 2024 challenger – the A524.

Alpine revealed the A524 and the colors they would be running on February 7. Underneath the predominantly black, blue, and pink livery, however, lies a completely revamped car, as compared to the A523, according to the team’s technical chief, Matt Harman.

F1 journalist Lawrence Baretto quoted Harman as revealing, “Only the steering wheel has been carried over from last year.” The A524 broke the covers at a ‘Motorsport Launch’ event for the team where they even revealed their WEC challenger for the 2024 season.

Speaking about the A524, Harman went on to reveal (as quoted by Formula1.com), “The A524 approach has been aggressive but deliberate in the fact we are creating a wider scope to add performance to the car.”

While the launch event was a huge success, fans mostly trolled the team on social media for the choice of going majorly with a black livery. This is because many teams are now employing this tactic to save crucial weight when it comes to their race cars.

Alpine start 2024 season with one major tactical move

As soon as the covers were off of Alpine’s 2024 car, keen-eyed fans noticed a major attribute of the A524. While the team did retain their ‘classic‘ blue and pink theme, the majority of the car was black, without any paint, and covered in carbon fiber.

While the choice to keep the carbon fiber unpainted is an obvious tactic to save weight, this marks a departure from their previous liveries as the team ran a predominantly blue livery with accents of pink to pay homage to their sponsor BWT.

Due to BWT’s involvement, however, the first eight races of the season will be decorated by the team with a livery that is predominantly pink. However, post that, the team will revert to the livery they showcased to the fans during their launch event.

As for their performance, no one expects Alpine to make a huge step in closing down the gap to the top five teams. However, after the stark management change they’ve witnessed, many will be keen to see how the team progresses. Will they completely collapse? Or will the change of hierarchy help the team challenge for the top places more often in 2024?

Alpine faced numerous challenges last year, including subpar performances from its drivers and an ineffective car. Additionally, the team also experienced management turmoil. In light of these challenges, reports from a journalist suggest that Alpine drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly are exploring potential exits from the French team.

Spanish journalist Pedro Fermin reports that both Frenchmen have approached their management to explore possibilities with other teams. Although Ocon and Gasly are contracted with the Enstone outfit until the 2024 season, neither of them seems inclined towards a contract extension.

This is because, throughout the last season, both Ocon and Gasly achieved only one podium each. Moreover, there were multiple instances where the drivers either disagreed with the team’s decisions or were unable to finish races due to their fault. The Enstone team also faced a double DNF as their drivers collided on a chaotic restart in Australia.

Adding to their difficulties, both Ocon and Gasly grappled with hydraulic issues in races held in Great Britain and Azerbaijan, respectively. Moreover, in Hungary, neither of the drivers managed to finish the races. Altogether, Ocon and Gasly encountered 10 instances of crashes throughout the season. As a result of these circumstances, the two drivers are said to be discontented.

In the end, Alpine secured a disappointing sixth place in the constructor’s championship and oversaw a period of internal unrest. CEO Laurent Rossi and team boss Otmar Szafnauer were dismissed in the middle of the season.

Additionally, sporting driver Alan Permane also left after the season, finishing his long-term association with the Enstone outfit. Currently, Bruno Famin has taken up the team principal role in the interim.

What are the options for Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly if they decide to leave Alpine?

Before the 2023 season, Alpine held a more favorable position, having concluded the 2022 season at P4. However, following the departure of key members from the squad, Alpine has encountered a decline in performance, resulting in a lack of positive results. Moreover, the recent success of former Alpine driver Fernando Alonso achieving consecutive podiums might also have affected the team’s morale.

Given these hard circumstances, both Alpine drivers might be contemplating their options post-Alpine. While eligibility for top F1 teams is uncertain, Spanish journalist Fermin suggests there could be a potential solution for Ocon. According to the reporter, the #31 driver is on the priority list for Audi.

The German automaker intends to join the 2026 season by taking over the Sauber team. For this, they’ve already started the process by appointing former McLaren team boss Andrea Seidl as their CEO.

However, Ocon isn’t the only contender in Audi’s recruitment efforts. Even Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg, and Valtteri Bottas have been linked with Audi as potential choices for their 2026 line-up.

Nonetheless, the 2025 driver market is going to be chaotic with many drivers looking for new contracts this season. So, Ocon and Gasly may want to cash in on any good suitable opportunities they find better than staying at Alpine.

Andretti is not in the best position to get its F1 entry up and running, as its engine supply preliminary agreement with Renault has expired. According to Formula Passion, Alpine team boss Bruno Famin summarized how the delay in Andretti’s process to secure its entry into the sport has caused the agreement to expire. However, the French team is not out of contention and intends to supply Andretti with a power unit if they secure the green light to join F1 in the near future.

When the FIA started the process of inviting proposals for an 11th F1 team, Andretti was the front-runner. They also have made a visionary partnership with GM’s Cadillac to develop their indigenous F1 engine.

However, as Andretti aims to join F1 as early as 2025 or 2026, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has claimed that they will have an existing engine partner initially. Alpine-Renault was the top name that many expected to supply the American team with engines till its Cadillac program gets ready.

Now, despite its preliminary agreement having expired, the French brand is willing to work out and find “a common solution” if Andretti gets the nod to kickstart its F1 dream officially. The American team has reopened talks with Renault, as the FIA has given them the approval to join F1.

However, the ball is now in Formula One management (FOM)’s court as many existing teams have objections against Andretti and an 11th F1 team in general. Though, with GM and Cadillac’s engine program in a nascent stage, Renault could be the preferred engine supplier, if Andretti joins the grid anytime soon.

But the more pertinent question is will they be able to secure its entry?

Can Andretti buy Haas to enter F1?

Haas is on shaky ground at the moment after the huge exit of Guenther Steiner. The Italian-American boss was one of the bedrock at Haas and led the team through some tough times in the past eight years. However, now with his exit, the Banbury-based team is looking to restructure and desperately improve on performance.

Team owner Gene Haas has been vocal about not finishing last again, as they did in 2023. As the primary investor, he expects returns with good results from the team but feels that Haas doesn’t need more investment than he has already made.

While the quantum of his investment and his involvement is a subjective matter, Haas is struggling financially and operationally. In F1, teams need a lot of financial backing and operational support to even make a bid to be in the midfield pack. Relative to other midfield contenders, Haas lacks resources and funding on several fronts.

So, many experts have put forth the option for Gene Haas to sell the team entirely if he isn’t willing to actively invest more for his side’s success. Michael Andretti and his team could become one of the front runners to buy out Haas and set up its F1 operation.

With their strategic partnership with GM and Cadillac and the perceived financial preparedness to do well in F1, Andretti could substitute Haas as F1’s American outfit. As there have been objections against an 11th team, it also resolves the issue of teams not wanting to split their revenue share.

Buying out an existing team seems to be a viable option for new brands to enter F1. Case in point: Audi buying a majority stake in Sauber can be the precedent Andretti follows. For now, Gene Haas won’t want to think about selling out. Meanwhile, Andretti is still striving to enter the sport as an 11th team, as things stand.
