Alpine drivers take center stage in episode 5 as their rivalry reaches new heights.

Episode 6 follows Lewis Hamilton as the 7X world champion contemplates his future in F1. The following episodes see a light shine on athletes and celebs investing in Alpine while also focusing on Ferrari bringing Fred Vasseur on board. Episode 9 lays emphasis on Daniel Ricciardo coming back to a driving seat after almost a one-year break. Why isn’t Max Verstappen in DTS season 6?

It is no surprise that Max Verstappen is not the focus of Drive to Survive. In an interview with TIME, he expressed his concerns over the growing marketing-centric moves by the sport’s authorities. He believes the sport is starting to lay emphasis on things that aren’t as important as racing.

Hence, he grows wary of where F1 is headed. With three F1 championships already under his belt, the Dutchman isn’t hungry for any records. Hence, if the dramatization continues, Verstappen will not stick around to experience it.

The “legality wire” (the name incorporated by experts for the contentious part of the front wing), at first impression, gives at least two technical advantages. One of those is the creation of a vortex that would move along the inside of the front tires.

The other is the ability of this vortex to drive away the dirty air from the car in front. How effectively the engineers in Brackley have mastered this concept? Only time will tell.

How Mercedes engineers interpreted the regulations to their advantage

When the ground-effect era came into existence, many believed it took away the freedom of engineers to display their true abilities. However, the front wing was one area of development that gave ample carte blanche to be artistic. Despite that, there are certain restrictions which a team has to work under.

Among those is the presence of no more than 4 elements on the front wing. While the W15’s front wing essentially features 4 flaps, the topmost of those is connected to the nose through a thin and presumable bendy element, the legality wire.

The design also satisfies the requirement that makes the visibility of every closed section, when viewed from below, a must. It also satisfies the exception of the rearmost point of the rearmost closed section not to be visible, when viewed from above.

Mercedes also features an innovative P-shaped sidepod inlets that caught the eye. While the slender design does not look aggressive enough in itself, when viewed in tandem with the front wing, the overall package begins to make more sense.

While the design is compliant with the principal regulations, some feel it violates the spirit with which these restrictions were legislated. However, that is an area that remains in the gray and Mercedes engineers deserve a pat on the back for their legal expert-like interpretation.

Mercedes has had a terrible time since the new ground effect regulations came into effect in 2022. They had a porpoising problem in 2022, which caused the team to win just one race that season.

Hamilton often felt like “sitting on the front wheels” in the W14 due to the proximity of his seating position to them. This was also hurting the Briton as the rear of the car was unstable. Their technical director, James Allison, cited that the cockpit issue Hamilton faced was more of a “symptom” of their rear instability than its “cause”.

Still, sitting closer to the front tires hurt the #44 driver’s visibility of the corner apex. So, the Brackley team needed to fix this issue come what may. For this change, they have had to rearrange and modify several aspects of the car. However, that was anyways going to happen with their big concept change on the W15.

Mercedes have had to redesign its gearbox and fuel tank assembly in the rear of the car to accommodate the 100 mm shift of the cockpit. Given they were already going to redesign the chassis after dropping their zero side pod philosophy, this became part of the revamp process.

What else have Mercedes changed on the W15?

As Toto Wolff had promised that the W15 would be a completely new car, Mercedes have delivered on it. Looking at the visible changes, the side pods look much more like the rest of the grid. However, The Race‘s Gary Anderson suggested that they don’t seem fully committed to Red Bull’s philosophy.

Still, the radiator inlets are much more in line with what the Red Bull concept showcases. At the front of the car, experts have noticed a peculiar detail about the W15’s front wing. One of the flaps of the front wing has a very slimmed down tiny thread-like connection to the nose.

Now, this is something that may come under FIA scrutiny, given the technical regulations state that there should be four elements on the front wing. Mercedes may have done this to have better airflow around the nose.

Usually, they try to find out such small gray areas to gain performance advantages. So, it would be interesting to see whether they retain this innovation or not.

At the rear of the car, it is a clear concept change with a push rod rear suspension. Aston Martin’s car reveal gave a teaser of what Mercedes may do with its rear suspension and that assumption was on point.

Aerodynamically, a push rod setup at the rear is a clear choice, which many teams have opted for. So, this rear suspension would also help the Brackley team in resolving its instability issues on the rear of the car.

However, Alonso is not the only driver who is vying for that second Mercedes seat. Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli is another option. The 17-year-old Italian will be competing in the 2024 F2 season with Prema Racing.

Jumping into a Formula 1 car and banging in lap times isn’t as easy as it looks on our television sets. Drivers follow a rigorous regime to keep themselves in shape. Moreover, the physical toll of racing an F1 car means your body needs to adjust to the demands. This is not something that can happen overnight.
